What makes us so different?

The protests in Thailand are getting way out of hand. The Reds are hell bent on the current Prime Minister leaving the office while the Yellow shirts want the government to take some form of action against the Red shirts or threten to intervene.

I am both suprised and puzzled by the audacity of the Thai people. I'm sure most of these people have jobs and worry about their livelihood too. Yet,nearly all activity has come to a standstill in certain areas of the capital, Bangkok. These people still manage to balance their lives while standing up and fighting for their political ideals. Why are'nt we like that? What makes Singaporeans so different?

We are both Asian nations and therefore, our cultures are more similar than different. Both our nations depend on tourists to keep our economies afloat. But why is it that the Tahi people are willing to stand up to make a stand yet Singaporeans are more than happy to just go about their daily routines. Its not only our youths who are politically apatic. All of us are.

One may argue that the sheer numbers who gathered to protest only make up a small percentage of the capital's population(which numbers around a few million).Singapore has only had its share of 'action' with SDP members gathering at Hong Lim Park to make their stand. Then again, these happenings are rare and few. Our government cracks down on opposition so fast, singaporeans dont even know they exist until the General Elections. Moreover, its the very fact that the Thai people refuse to be resigned to their fates that astonishes me. Their resilience amazes me and their audictiy has bowed me over.

Even the Tibetian monks had a peaceful march. Are we going to do anything about our political scene? Or we are simply going to be resigned to our fates?
